How do you measure if an employee works better from home or office?

It may seem not easy to measure employee productivity, whether the employee delivers from the office or home. But, when the company has relevant knowledge and expertise, the task does not seem too hard to tackle. The management needs to keep in mind some points.

Who measures productivity?

The senior management of the company has the responsibility to measure the productivity of an employee or a team. The results are both expressed in quantitative and qualitative terms. The HR department conveys the detailed reports to the senior management of the company.

Measuring the efficiency level of employees

A company needs to be focused when it wants to measure the efficiency level of its employees. The results dictate how the company sets its policies and implements strategies in the near future. Some of the goals in this context are:

  • Getting an overview of employee productivity
  • Checking the requirements to re-organise a team
  • Understanding the potential of an employee
  • Gauging the dedication of an employee
  • Ascertaining the incentive schemes and benefits programmes based on evaluation
  • Assessing the strategies of recruiting employees for the company

What is the actual difficulty?

In the time of the pandemic, many businesses, especially tech start-ups, have allowed their employees to work from home. In recent months, some companies are again opening their offices at physical locations.

The big question is – which is a more profitable and sustainable option for the company – allowing employees to work from home or the office? The correct answer lies in the comparative analysis of the efficiency level in both contexts. Intelligent evaluations can reveal valuable information, helping in finalising the most optimal HR strategy on this matter.

Following a simple measurement model

A simple measurement model is a model that has a lesser number of parameters to assess the employees’ productivity. Also, a simple model enables HR to evaluate productivity in less time. The priority from an HR perspective should be following a simple model that will not pose any difficulty in calculating and interpreting the results. Also, a simple measurement model is more convenient to process. It saves time for the HR department and senior management to reach a concrete conclusion.

Checking the submission time

If a task has many segments and each segment has a specific time for submission, it is wise to check the details about measuring the efficiency level of the employee. Two cases are required to be compared. The cases are submission parameters when the employee is working from the office and when he/she is working from home.

It is essential to monitor the progress metre of the project daily, to get coherent ideas about employee productivity.

The HR needs to meticulously assess the progress of a large scale project when the team involved works from office to the case when the same team works from home. In this case, it is not merely about monitoring an individual employee. Such a straightforward approach helps the company to measure the required parameters swiftly.

Embracing the tools and technologies

When the HR of your company integrates the necessary tools and technologies to measure the performance level of your remote workers (which is a more difficult task), it becomes easier for your company’s management to assess the productivity level.

Some of the tools that you can use to measure the productivity of remote workers are Teamwork, Trello, Slack, Google Workspace, Monday.com, etc. The various functions and benefits of the tools are:

  • The sophisticated platform of an advanced tool helps a business bill each minute, keeping a thorough team organised, with tons of interactive features and measurement visualisations.
  • A comprehensive digital platform enables a company to perfectly manage its remote workers, assessing the progress of different projects simultaneously, without wasting any resources.
  • A feature-rich corporate tool can support a company to evaluate the performance levels of its employees. It makes the business framework more transparent.
  • A cost-effective option can efficiently monitor the progress of projects and accordingly assess the remote workers.
  • The tools can also efficiently distribute and organise remote workers’ tasks, along with helping the management in the evaluation of their productivity.

Remaining sure about the performance metrics

When you aim to compare the efficiency level of workers when they deliver from the office and when they deliver from home, you should be very clear about the performance metrics. Unless the performance metrics are well-defined, it is impossible to assess employee productivity. Some of the typical metrics in this regard are:

  • Volume of sales
  • Revenue generated per team/team member
  • Number of customer issues successfully resolved
  • The average rate of response time
  • The conversion rate of leads, based on benchmark figures
  • The cost of customer acquisition

It is crucial to reward the accomplishments

A company should never overlook the matter of appreciating deserving employees. The measurements will reveal the names of the high performers. Accordingly, the management must reward the hard-working employees that bring good results to the company. It helps in motivating them to improve the work culture.

There should be transparency in the evaluation

It is needless to say that complete transparency is one of the most critical keys to efficiently evaluating employee productivity. There should not be any compromise in this context. It is the responsibility of the HR department of the company.

The employees should be aware of the metrics

The employees should know the metrics used to evaluate their performance. HR should convey the details in a clear language and written format. Good communication from the company’s side helps the employees to remain mentally prepared to deliver their best. Also, it avoids confusion in future.
